Legalization of Marijuana :: legalized marijuana

Legalization of Marijuana Marijuana is the cause of much commotion and debating, as the question of legalization becomes more of an issue. Drugs are a major influential force in countries all over the world today. Legalization is an option that has not had a chance, but really should be given one. Although many people feel that legalizing marijuana would increase the amount of drug use, marijuana should be legalized because it will reduce the great amount of money spent on enforcement, and will therefore increase our countries revenue and lessen crime, and will also be useful in treating certain medical conditions. Marijuana, also known as pot, weed, bud, herb, ghanja, grass, wacky tabacci, funky bhudda, green, indo, mary jane, hemp, kif, bones, funny stuff, etc. is a substance obtained from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the pistillate hemp plant. It is technically known as cannabis sativa and is a tall, widely cultivated Asian herb of the mulberry family. There are many di fferent ways of getting this drug into one's system. The most common method consists of rolling the finely chopped substance in thin papers to make marijuana cigarettes or joints. It is also smoked through a pipe or through a water filtration system known as a bong. Legalization is considered unnecessary by many people. They feel that it will increase the amount of drug use throughout the world. They state that in many cases, drug users who have quit, quit because of trouble with the law. Legalization would eliminate the legal forces that discourage the users from using or selling drugs. They also say that by making drugs legal, the people who have never tried drugs for fear of getting caught by the law, will have no reason to be afraid anymore and will become users (Snyder, 1988). Legalization will be profitable to global economies in two ways. It will allow for money spent on drug law enforcement to be spent more wisely and it will increase revenue. There have been escalating cost s spent on the war against drugs and countless dollars spent on rehabilitation. Every year in the United States, ten billion dollars are spent on enforcing drug laws alone. Drug violators accounted for about forty percent of all criminals in federal prisons (Marijuana retains.., 1990, p.A-6). In 1989, a Republican county executive of Mercer County, N.J., estimated that it would costs approximately one billion dollars to build the jail space required to house all the drug users in Trenton alone(Talah, 1993, p.

Book Review on Chinese Cinderella: the Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter

1 Book review on Chinese Cinderella: The Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter By Caren Shin In wealthy families, babies are born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Not quite for Adeline. In fact, the recount of Adeline Yen Mah’s childhood is a relatively sad one even though her father was a millionaire. She was seen as bad luck to the family as her mother died after giving birth to her. She is always frowned upon by her older and younger siblings, neglected by her father and scolded by her stepmother. She has to learn to depend on herself as there was often no one to help her. The story reveals the two sides of her family: on the surface it is friendly and caring, while inside one can realize how the children are really treated by their stepmother Niang. As the youngest of five children from her father’s first marriage, Adeline has to suffer many blows because every one looks down on her especially when she receives her father’s praise. Adeline’s main reason for her love of school was to be away from her stepmother so that she could become a different person that was admired by her peers as she topped her class regularly. Her whole personality changed when she was away from her Niang and with someone that knew her from the heart; her friend Wu Chung-Mei, her Ye Ye and Aunt Baba. At age eight, Adeline was given a duckling, the only one left after all her siblings had picked their choice. Although it was not the best duckling, she still loved it dearly and treasured every opportunity that she could get with it. She named it Precious Little Duckling (PLT). I think this illustrates her love for her pet and that she was pleased that her siblings had left her one. It also gives a comparison of how each sibling is treated by their parents. Since she was the youngest and the least likely to make a fuss, her big brother took her duckling when her father ordered him to test the obedience training of his dog Jackie. Adeline immediately sensed her duckling’s fate; she knew that PLT was going to die. When Jackie’s demonstration of obedience was over, PLT was bleeding and passed away next morning. Adeline and her third brother buried PLT under a magnolia tree. Adeline was saddened by the above incidence and recalled every time when she sensed the presence of a magnolia, she would remember PLT. I feel this demonstrates the love she felt for PLT and how heartbreaking the experience as. Throughout this passage of the story, I envision there are many emotions often shown as colours that were being pressed into Adeline’s mind: white, yellow, black and brown. I have chosen these colours because white represents the magnolias, yellow symbolizes the feathers of PLT, black for the grim horror that happened, and br own for the eyes of PLT and the earth on top of PLT’s grave. When Adeline became a sixth former at Sheng Xin (Sacred Heart) Primary School, a democratic election was held in their class to see who would be their class president and head girl of the whole school. She teamed up with her friend Wu Chun-Mei who won the election for her. On her triumphant day, many of her supporters went to her house to give her presents. Her father and Niang were very upset and annoyed at the fact that Adeline’s friends were at their house, disturbing them. When she was called to her father’s room for the cause for all her friends to be there, Adeline did not know. Niang did not believe her and slapped her making her nose bleed. In front of all her friends (with blood still dripping down her face) she told them to go away because her father was sleeping. Then she was told to open all her presents in front of her parents and throw them all in the rubbish bin. I experience the sadness she has felt when she was 2 humiliated by her stepmother. Adeline must have had a determination not to show her weakness by crying. After this incident, Niang ordered her to pack all her things as Adeline, Niang and her father were going to Tianjin on an airplane. As she was on the plane, they had to fill out landing cards. Adeline’s father forgot Adeline’s Chinese name and her date of birth. Since her father had forgotten her Chinese name, Adeline felt deeply hurt as her father confused her name with her little sister’s. This meant that her father had forgotten all about her and had only remembered her little sister, even though she was his real daughter. I feel dreadful at the thought that her father could forget her name. Her date of birth became her father’s; November 30 because her date of birth was unknown. In this story of Adeline Yen Mah’s childhood life, I felt many ups and downs and how she might have felt. It was surprising to see a girl like Adeline being humiliated in front of her friends who wanted to support her. If I were in her shoes, I would feel scared and frightened because the supporters might not support me anymore because they had known of the family ugliness. I think that this family ugliness was hidden from other people seeing it by Niang and Adeline’s father. To prove this point, when Niang met other people, she wanted them to know that the family only had her two children. She kept the five children from her husband’s first marriage in the dark, thus swerving Adeline’s father into forgetting his former wife’s younger children including Adeline. Her father and Niang went with Adeline to Tianjin and left her as a border in St Joseph’s School. At first, there were many people attending the school but soon Adeline was the only student left in the whole school. All of them fled from the communist army. I feel how she must have felt in these circumstances as no one was bothered to look after her while she was the only student. She would feel bewildered and frightened at the same time as she was being punished from negligence by her father and stepmother. During this story I feel Adeline’s sadness, despair and happy moments. I feel very grateful that I am in a different family and that I did not have to go through what Adeline had to undergo. The story of her childhood is a very sad one, but I hope that other children do not have to suffer the same case as she did. Her life had many hopeful and downhearted moments she had and only determination helped her live through this dark period. Encouragement from her Aunt Baba and her Ye Ye was the only source to give her the strength to be a good scholar and prove her Niang wrong. In this story, Adeline has a message to neglected and unloved children of the world – within every one there is something precious and unique. Her childhood experience brings out the importance of perseverance in life. One must persist to do one’s best when one is hopeless, to have the faith when one’s spirit is down, and to change fears into courage and strength. Everyone of us can be Cinderella and successful as Adeline if we hold her belief that â€Å"one single positive dream is more important than a thousand negative realities. † END

Aristotles Contributions to the World An Analysis

Aristotle Aristotle Introduction If liberty and equality, as is thought by some are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in the government to the utmost. Law is order, and good law is good order. Man is by nature a political animal. ~Aristotle Philosophers, historians, scientists, politicians and other professionals across many disciplines consider Aristotle to be one of the greatest and prolific figures of the civilization of Ancient Greece. He lived during the 4th century BC, born in a Grecian colony, Stagira, and died in Chalcis. Aristotle was heavily concerned with the character of man. He was concerned with ethics, friendship, politics, and human nature. He was, for nearly two decades, a pupil of Plato, another one of the great Greek philosophers. The two did not agree, but the companionship and intellectual stimulation they provided for each other and their fellow philosophers provided the fodder that became the basis for branches of philosophy, political thought and political science, ethics morality, and law, among other subjects. The paper will examine and analyze Aristotles contributions to the world and historical influence with regard to political thought, and the role of government. Facebook The Negative Impact - 823 Words

Facebook: The Negative Impact Facebook is a popular social networking website that connects and updates families, friends, and colleagues. This site was supposed to have a positive impact on our lives, however, it also came with consequences. Facebook has caused our lack of ability to communicate and connect with others. This type of social media site has been an integrated part of most people’s life especially the young adults. Facebook has affected the divorce rate for married couples, cyberbullying for young adults, our mental health, and dangerous outcomes for posting personal information. According to Russell B. Clayton, Alexander Nagurney, and Jessica R. Smith, authors of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, couples who spend excessive time on Facebook may cause negative interpersonal relationship outcomes. This book also suggested that this social networking website leads users to connect or re-connect with former partners that can cause emotional and physi cal cheating, breakups, or divorce with their current partners. In the year 2010, 81 percent of divorce attorneys stated that they’d witnessed an increasing number of divorce cases using social networking evidence in the last five years. 66 percent of the lawyers said that Facebook was the number one source of finding online evidence (Wong). Problem-Posing Vignette Free Essays

Understanding the Dynamics of Culture Shock as a Tool for Vignette Reflection After I finished my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, I taught for one year in primary school. After which, I taught in the King Saud University which relatively offers better income than my previous work. In order to upgrade my educational skills, I went to the University of Wollongong in Australia to take Masters of Education in Educational Leadership. We will write a custom essay sample on Problem-Posing Vignette or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, since my arrival in the said university, unexpected things came up. These â€Å"unexpected† things I classified as â€Å"problems† since they were disrupting my psyche (ability to understand why things happen in such a way) and to an extent my studies. These problems ranged from the difficulty of learning English to the so-called culture shock. Useful paragraph to set the scene But the problem of learning English could be resolved through a thorough study of the language. This was not the case when it comes to culture shock. For one, understanding culture shock would involve a clear understanding of the cultures that the students in the university belong. Identification of a couple of problems When I took a taxi from the Sydney airport to my place of stay, I noticed that driving was done on the other side of the road unlike in Saudi Arabia. I really thought that I could not drive in Australia, but in due time I was able to do so. Added to that, I also noticed that many people in Australia liked to walk, unlike in Saudi, where all people have cars to use. It was pretty odd for a developed nation not to require its citizens to use cars as a mode of transportation. Maybe it was the preference of most of the people in Australia to walk than use car as a mode of transportation. Whatever the case, I was bound to examine the dynamics of this odd experience. Detail of experience With regard to the issue of gender, in Saudi Arabia, it is the norm that boys cannot study together with girls. In Australia, especially in the university, boys and girls are usually involved in group studies, that is, boys and girls can study together without the restriction of law or custom. One of the â€Å"greatest† culture shock that I experienced was the time when girl students of the university (my classmates) study with me. Corollary to that, I also noticed that in Australia, women can teach men on a wide variety of subjects which is generally prohibited in Saudi Arabia. Hence, there were many times that women were teaching me; some were connected to my subjects, others issues essential to my field of specialization. Lastly, I really thought that books in Australia are much cheaper than in Saudi Arabia. But such was not the case. Books in Australia are actually more expensive compared with the books in Saudi Arabia. I was really caught up on this experience since Australia being a developed country can afford its citizens cheap books, but it was not the case (thinking that since Australia encourages promotes education at all levels, it necessarily follows that it will provide cheap educational materials). More detail of experience Now, my primary concern was to how to adapt or at least understand the justification of my experience. Since I came from a different cultural setting, it was hard for me in the start to cope up with the habits and customs of the Australian people. For an ordinary Australian or European, this is not really a problem since their cultural settings are almost similar. In Europe, boys are usually mixed with girls during study periods. I do not know about the prices of books in Europe, but certainly it would not be a problem for the Europeans if the books in an Australian university are cheaper or more expensive than the books in a European university. Walking as a preferred mode of transportation was not really a big deal for Europeans or Asians perhaps. Most of them usually walk as in the case of major European or Asian cities. But in Saudi Arabia, things are quite different. There are laws that prohibit boys from studying with girls. Girls are also prohibited from teaching boys, and with regard to walking, the Saudi government advises its citizens to use car as mode of transportation. Initially, I had this fear that I might not be able to interact effectively with the students of the university because I belong to a different ethnicity, but because of continued acquaintance with the students, gradually I was able to understand the justifications of the cultural setting to which I am now seating. It was really odd for me that because of continued interaction with them, the culture shock that I experienced when I first came in Australia was melting away. Indeed, almost all of the â€Å"culture shocks† were for me just common events here in Australia. Now, there are definitely reasons or justifications for events that what meets the eye in the first instance. First, it is the perception of â€Å"oddness†, and then there is understanding. I was able to conclude that continuous interaction with people who came from different ethnicities or cultural settings can help reduce culture shock. The more one interacts and talk to people, the more one understands the concerns of those people. Nonetheless, if biases are removed in the daily interaction with people in the university, one cannot discern the true meaning of the cultural setting presented to you. As such, without much effort, my culture shock was gradually reduced. I just noticed that I was beginning to understand the dynamics of the events that I previously experienced. Reflecting on the past also helped me assessed my understanding of the issues presented to me. Thus what I did not really understand in the past was tested through real-life interaction. Thus, the things or situation I termed as â€Å"culture shock† were becoming common things for me. Now there are two questions that should be presented: â€Å"How do I absorb â€Å"culture shock†? and â€Å"How can I help my friends or anyone who wants to reduce the effect of culture shock?† How to cite Problem-Posing Vignette, Essay examples

Management and Organizations in a Global Proportions

Question: Describe about the Management and Organizations in a Global Environment. Answer: Part 1 Activity 1: The Milgram Experiment The behavioral study of obedience conducted by Stanley Milgram in the year 1963 stays evidence to the fact that ordinary, courteous and decent nature of humankind may be challenged when put under pressure from authoritative figures. In fact, the experiment showed that when an individual obeys to an unjust authoritative figure, they could go to any extent inflicting pain to extreme level the other person. It was further found from the study that more than 65% of the experiment subjects or the volunteers continued to inflict severe pain in what they perceived as legitimate authoritative figure (Abc.net.au. 2016). According to my opinion, obedience to authority is definitely applicable to all human beings. The act of inflicting emotional, mental or physical pain can be related to the respective profession of the individual. For example, a sergeant employed in Australian Federal police may inflict severe physical pain to a suspect to make them confess of their guilt. It must be noted that the decision to take extreme actions of inflicting severe physical pain may be because of direct orders from Deputy Commissioner or commander of the police force. Similarly, if my supervisor in an organization instructs me, I also may take to inflict mental or emotional pain to some extent to the other individual. Although it has to be noted that the extent of showing inhumane nature will only be limited to some extent rather than take any decision which may prove to be disastrous for the other person in the organization (Brannigan 2013). Activity 2: Solomon Asch and Group Conformity It will be wrong to say that my personal decisions are always based on objective process. In many times, it is difficult to rule out the factors leading to the comfort zone and there comes the personal opinions, perspectives and feelings of decision-making which are completely subjective in nature and are very often adopted by me. As per the experiment conducted by Solomon Ash, the reason for being one susceptible to conform to the group opinion is mainly based on informational conformity (also known as social conformity) or normative conformity. Based on two theories one may desire to be a part of the group because of the convincing nature of the group. This is seen in positive facts, which are approved by the society, and in most cases, the young generation learns from the older generation in terms of social conformity. In some cases, it also happened that go along with the group so that we do not face any criticism by being deviant from the opinions of the group. Hence, it can be said that for the purpose of greater acceptance one conforms to the norms of the group based on social conformity and normative conformity theories (Kundu and Cummins 2013). In any situation where the subjects are apprehensive of bringing insecurities in maintaining bond among team members of a group, then it can influence a member to change attitude, behavior or opinion within the group. This is particularly evident in teams of modern business organizations, where an individual although having a different opinion about an issue or a step taken by the higher management, is more likely to go in favor of rest of the group members. This has been observed mainly because of fear of losing trust, fear of criticism from the group members and for a greater amount of acceptance by conforming to the norms of the group (Toelch and Dolan 2015). Part 2 Activity 1: Linear Programming Word Problem The main purpose of the video has been shown for a rancher mixing two different brands of food in order to minimize the cost. The main learning objective of the video has provided insights about taking different proportions of quantities of two different kinds of brand and mixing them in such a manner to obtain the minimum cost possible. The rational decision-making approach has been also seen in terms of maintaining the constraints, which are associated with the brand such as in the given case brand X consisted of 15 g of protein and 10 g of fat while brand B consists of 20 g of protein and 5 g of fat. The rational decision-making approach has been also seen in not only mixing the two quantities in the right proportions but also selecting the minimum cost from a list of computed costs (YouTube. 2016). The limitations are seen in form of applicability in issues where the constraints and the desired objective functions are linear in nature. There has to be always expressed in terms of the questions, whereas in practical situations the objective functions are the constraint on not linear in nature and hence they cannot be applied. The limitations are also seen in not considering the uncertain whether factors. It also has to consider integer two as the solutions and one singular objective is only good in common practice. While calculation of linear programming graphical methods the parameters are assumed to be constant in nature, whereas in real life they may not be constant. Hence some of the assumptions are unrealistic in nature (Dent et al.2013). Linear programming model can have significant use in serving of planning for econometric models such as formulation of multilevel planning of national, state level problems and various types of other problems related to storage of food grain, transportation in urban systems. It has various types of applications in production of the environment for the purpose of handling various and hazardous materials and finding out alternative sources such as clean energy, recycling and other cleaner designs (Rueda-Medina et al. 2013). The main advantage is seen in form of dealing with complex problems and improving the quality of the overall decision-making. It is further helpful for analysis of location preference such as public hospitals, health centers and recreational parks. Linear programming also plays a vital role in utilizing data for agricultural planning and allocation of the limited resources such as the factors of production in order to increase the net revenue (Higle and Sen 2013).
